Genetic Engineering
What is Genetic Engineering ??
Genetic engineering is the process of manually adding new DNA to an organism. The goal is to add one or more new traits that are not already found in that organism. Examples of genetically engineered (transgenic) organisms currently on the market include plants with resistance to some insects, plants that can tolerate herbicides, and crops with modified oil content. The deliberate modification of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic material.
About course
Genetic Engineering, also known as genetic modification, is the process through which an organism’s
genome is manipulated through biotechnology. In this process new DNA is inserted in the host genome
by first isolating and copying the genetic material of interest using molecular cloning methods to
generate a DNA sequence, or by synthesizing the DNA, and then inserting this construct into the host
organism. Genetic engineering techniques have been applied in numerous fields including research,
agriculture, industrial biotechnology, and medicine. Genetic Engineering studies the method in which
traits and characteristics of an organism are transmitted through generations and the reasons which
cause genetic disorders. The Genetic Engineering graduates get the opportunity to work in medical and
pharmaceutical industries, agriculture industries, research and development to name a few.
Educational :
A qualified genetic engineer, must have a graduate / postgraduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology or biochemistry OR a doctorate (PhD) from a recognized university, based on 2-3 years of his own research under the guidance of a professor/lecturer.
